Step into college with Jump Start
Written by Rodrigo Meirelles, Douglas College
“This is it, I made it to college! After all those years of having to take courses I wasn’t interested in, I now have control over my life and my studies and can do what I love.”
Little did I know that after the initial excitement of being accepted into the Commerce and Business Administration Diploma at Douglas College, there would come an overwhelming feeling of having too many options. Suddenly it did not seem so bad to have been given a set course schedule in high school.
What electives should I choose? When should I take ECON 1150? What about pre-requisites? Wait, what are those? Ok, I know what to take, but how do I register for those courses? All these questions were going through my head and I was thousands of miles away, south of the border in Brazil, when a group of new students were being given all those answers and more at an event I would later be responsible for planning and executing — Jump Start.
Jump Start is the first of a series of events designed to make your transition from high school to college as seamless as possible. This event focuses on guiding you through the course registration process, introduces you to a group of current Douglas students to whom you can ask questions about what it is like to be a college student and gives you the opportunity to get to know other students in your program and start creating relationships that will last a lifetime.
I could not attend Jump Start, but if I had the opportunity I would not miss it. Besides having all those questions answered and meeting other students, I would also get free food and a chance to win some awesome prizes (did I hear Jay-Z and Beyoncé tickets?). Also, this event marks the beginning of a new phase in your life. College is a fresh start, a blank canvas in which you can start to create your future.
Join us on June 4 at 4:30pm at the Coquitlam Campus. Find more information here.
