Humans of DC: Coaching for change
By Douglas College Student Life
“My passion is coaching; I coach youth level soccer. I want to help kids develop and be a voice for those who don’t have a mentor to guide them through things. When I see a positive change, it’s nice to know that I’m part of that. Also, it’s nice to see youth develop their own personality and perspective with someone supporting them.
“I was raised in foster care, so I had the support of my social workers. With my love of soccer, I’ve had many coaches who gave me that mentorship and support, so that made me want to pass that on to others, and give back.”
“I went bungee jumping in Whistler. That kind of brought me to a space of just going out and exploring and not being secluded. Just letting loose as much as possible; it was crazy. At first, I was really nervous, and as soon as it happened, I was like ‘I shouldn’t be nervous.’ It was great letting loose!”
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions, or try new things. If you’re unsure of something, just know that you have friends, family, and teachers who can help carve a pathway for your future.”
