It isn’t always obvious when someone needs help. Telka Pesklevits can relate. The bubbly, pink-haired budding writer always has a smile on her face. But like many students, Telka struggles with anxiety and depression, making it sometimes difficult to meet her obligations at school.

She lauds Douglas College Counselling Services for giving her the support she needs to continue her studies in the Associate of Arts in Creative Writing program – an option she doubts she would have at a larger institution.

“I’ve gone through some pretty monumental life changes during my time here – some good and some bad. But the entire time, I’ve had a community I can turn to for help, and a network of resources I wouldn’t have had if I wasn’t at Douglas,” Telka says.

College can be a stressful and confusing time for many students. Often this has an impact on school performance. It may be helpful to talk to someone who can assist you with managing personal challenges and easing the pressure of college life.

If you are dealing with a problem that is affecting your school performance, it may be useful to talk to someone who can support you. Counsellors, located at both New Westminster and Coquitlam campuses, are trained to provide short term personal counselling, career counselling and student advocacy.
